Alexander, the King of Macedonia and one of the greatest army leaders in the history of warfare, conquers much of the known world. 'Alexander' traces the short, but adventurous life of the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.), who conquered almost the entire known world of his era. From his childhood as the son of King Philip, to acending the thrown at age 20 in 336 B.C. upon his father's murder, and starting in 334 B.C., Alexander crossed into Asia on his 11-year conquest of the known world. From his conquests of Egypt, to battles with the Persians and the capture of Babylon, operations near Maracanda and in Afghanistan, and pushing all the way to India where he reigned unchallenged before his sudden death at age 32. Though Alexander made use of the well-oiled army created by his father, he pushed the limits of Macedonian & Greek power to levels King Philip could not have dreamed of. You've probably heard the bad reviews for Alexander, and I don't disagree with them. The drama is kind of corny and the movie does get boring, but the action will have you at the edge of your seat. The movie starts out at young Alexander's home and then goes on to him riding horses, getting education, and all that. Then it goes to a battle scene with Persians and Alexanders army. This is a great and thrilling battle with charriots cutting legs off, pikes going through bodies, and all that gory stuff. The battle is excellently filmed and the stabs and slashes and people flying everywhere are very realistic. The rest of the middle of the movie is journeys, executions, and love scenes with Alexander and his Persian wife. Then it goes to another battle scene with war elephants in the jungle. To me this battle is one of the best i've ever seen, with elephants smashing bodies and Indians beating people with hammers. Then Alexander goes one on one with an elephant, until the man on it throws a spear at Alexander. The rest of the movie is about the army going home and Alexander dying. If only the movie had more battles it would of been better. But then again, it's a three and a half hour long movie with only two battles, so don't expect a Troy out of this movie. I give it seven stars. This movie is a lot bad. Have no sense to find money and create a so ridiculous "thing".<br/><br/>I have a theory which I give the name of "Braveheart effect (2)". Since the movie Braveheart -1995 (which was good) give money to producer of Hollywood, some guys things "Why not make similar movies and so win the jackpot?"<br/><br/>So Gladiator (2000) come, and a "series" follow - King Arthur (2004), Alexander (2004),etc.<br/><br/>Another theory is that maybe Oliver Stone smoke too much Opium or his head come so big that he think all what he can do will be "wonderful"!<br/><br/>Or he wanted to show that "Alexander" was gay. What a new !<br/><br/>A lot of guys in past was gay. Even, IF Jesus exist it was probably gay. So what ? It's not a reason to make a so soporific movie.<br/><br/>Really don't buy neither rent this boring "movie". It's pathetic to create this kind of thing in 2004 and when our name is Oliver Stone… Makes for a long, lumpy trip with a charismatic guide and some brilliant detours. First of all there's the Theatrical Cut that runs approx. 175 minutes. and has been released to cinemas in November 2004.<br/><br/>In July 2005 a Director's Cut was put out on DVD that is shorter than the original version and runs approx. 167 minutes. Stone did not put in any new scenes, save for an extension of an already existing scene and a short insertion from Aristotle. However, he did change the movies structure; for example, the battle of Gaugamela is now seen earlier. Also, the movie is a bit more fast-paced since some scenes have been trimmed down and many dialogue details have been changed, something one most likely only notices if one knows both versions. A good example is Alexander being taught by Aristotle, as shown in the report.The Director's Cut is a bit clearer than the Theatrical Version, the structure is a bit more demanding and the opening is better designed. It is altogether better than the Theatrical Version but not obligatory if you already own it.<br/><br/>But Stone wasn't finished with his movie yet because later the so-called Final Cut was released, that runs approx. 214 minutes. The only true big extensions concerns Alexanders servant Bagaos. The homoerotic undertones were already in the Theatrical Version too much for many viewers.
